May 2011 Fiber Fact

Bamboo fibre is a cellulose fibre extracted or fabricated from natural bamboo (and possibly other additives) and is made from (or in the case of material fabrication, is) the pulp of bamboo plants. It is usually not made from the fibres of the plant, but is a synthetic viscose made from bamboo cellulose.

Bamboo has gained popularity as a "green" fibre. Manufacturers tout the fact that bamboo can be cultivated quickly, can be used as a cash crop to develop impoverished regions of the third world, and is a natural fibre (as opposed to popular synthetics like polyester) whose cultivation results in a decrease in greenhouse gases. Many people include bamboo in socks as it is believed to have health benefits and great wicking capabilities.

What comes after Milk Fiber - Of course -
Soy Protein Fiber
SOYSILK® is just one brand. Soy Silk fiber is made from the residue of soybeans from tofu manufacturing. This process is 100-percent natural and free of any petrochemicals, making it an extremely environmentally friendly product.

Soy is a completely renewable resource - coming from the earth and being wholly biodegradable.  Soy is sometimes referred to as "vegetarian cashmere" because of its incredible softness and luxurious hand. It wicks away moisture and has a soft, gentle drape. Interestingly, Henry Ford first thought of the idea of Soy Silk in the 1940s.

I'm sure everyone has been waiting with high anticipation for our second blog and of course the minute we get our blog up and running our monitor dies. Go figure. Today was one of those fun alpaca days. I got to help a neighboring farm work with their babies for their first show. Ours we aren't going to take as we are going to try the fiber shows first and see how they do. Competition is very tough at the shows and they are not cheap to attend. We have high hopes for our little Phi, but who knows. Anyway, back to the alpaca training. All I can say is --- Ratchet Ratchet Ratchet. And there is nothing better than watching the light bulb go off in their cute little fuzzy heads and you can see them jump up and down in their mind going - I got it - I got it. I know what you want now. Alpacas continually amaze me in how smart they are. If you haven't taken a Camelidynamics class, I highly recommend one.

Welcome to our first blog! I'm looking forward to keeping everyone informed on our exciting and fun farm life. As this is my first experience with this blog tool, I'm hesitant to sit here and type too much and then click GO and find it doesn't go too far. So on that note, I think I'm going to be brave and hit go and hope that everything falls into place. Stop back soon for more Alpaca Obsession, LLC craziness.
